For about 30 years of my life, I have worn my hair in various ways: natural, jheri curled, permed, braided and weaved. I quickly get tired of my hair styles, so I change frequently but always going back to a simple bob in the end. Over the years, I have become sick and tired of perming my hair. I’ve become sick and tired letting my hair dictate my lifestyle. (And I have told my kids several times, “mommy doesn’t want to swim because I just got a fresh perm.”) Not until recently have I felt guilty and just limited over something as ridiculous as my hair.

Recently, I went on vacation with my family and I felt like I had the worst hair ever. Now, I must admit I am a bit prissy (and it may not have been that bad) but for me to not take pictures because of my hair (and leaving behind no real memories of that vacation) is just crazy.

So lately, I’ve been having secret thoughts about going natural. I don’t know if that’s going to be the solution but I do know it will free me from getting my perm done every month (which I hate.) I would much rather get a wash and set every two weeks. After seeing The Oprah Show yesterday in which Chris Rock and Solange Knowles were a guest, discussing Chris’ new document “Good Hair.” I couldn’t help but to think I need to be freed from the bondage of the “creamy crack.” I need a new beginning.

But my dilemma arises when it comes to my prissy mindset. I like my hair when I get a fresh perm; I like it when it’s straight. I don’t see myself doing a Solange and cutting it all off. (Who by the way looks gorgeous with her short tresses.) And I’m not a true weave-a-holic. How do I make this transition? Have you done this? Tell me your story!
